Ian McPherson Managing Director

Ian is a serial entrepreneur with a background in software. His career started in the IT industry in Newcastle upon Tyne working with IBM, and attended Sunderland University on a graduate training programme whilst employed by Reyrolle Parsons (now North East Industries).

Ian spent 7 years in Heavy Engineering and then joined a Construction & Mining company Derek Crouch PLC). Ian became Head of IT and was appointed to the Board in 1984.

The Construction & Mining Company was acquired by Ryan International PLC in 1986. Ian moved to Wales as IT Director and was subsequently involved as part of the Ryan M&A team.

Ian set up a start-up software business called Syntech Computer Systems Ltd in 1990. After 2 years he secured 2nd round financing from 3i’s Plc, and in 1995 sold the business to Misys PLC.

Whilst developing Syntech, Ian was also the Chairman of the South West & Wales Software Services Association and set up (with the WDA) the first all wales internet service called “Network Wales”.

After the sale of Syntech Ian purchased another Technology company Relay Business Systems Ltd. Under Ian’s stewardship, Relay became the first Jarva Centre in Europe and pioneered a number of “e” commerce applications. Ian again secured growth capital from 3i’s Plc and increased revenues in the new business from £4m to £28m in 3 years; Relay was sold to a USA software company 3 years after it had been purchased by Ian.

Ian was contracted to the acquired UK business for 3 years, and it was during this period that Ian was an integral part of a team that completed an RTO and subsequent IPO of a Technology company on the Australian Stock Exchange.

Ian has through his own angel investment fund, had several years’ experience of construction, contracting and house building.

Ian is a “hands on manager” who has first-hand experience of the problems, issues, and challenges facing a fast-growing company.

Ian also has the experience of building shareholder value in an operational business whilst at the same time, ensuring the operation management team are fully focussed of maximising the return for the shareholders.

Ian founded Affresol in 2007.

John Simpson Non-executive Director

John is a qualified Chartered Accountant with long experience of a wide range of businesses.

For the 22 years, up to his retirement at the end of 2010, John, had been Finance Director then CFO of a media business which he and his Directors built into a global number one in its field.

John was key to the forming of a joint venture with, and eventually selling out to, the WPP Group. Revenues for the business were £2.1bn.

John has extensive corporate finance experience of buying and selling companies. John’s skill relates to the negotiation and documentation of the legal and taxation elements within the sale process.

John has well proven business management skills and prides himself in his ability to take an objective and helicopter view of the business.

John has played a key role in developing with the Affresol MD the growth and IPO strategy for the next 3 years.

Nigel Broderick Non-executive Director

Nigel was born in Burma and spent his childhood in Kenya. Nigel’s education in Kenya was at the Nairobi Army School followed by the Prince of Wales High School in Nairobi. Education continued at Gosport High School in the UK but family circumstances dictated that Nigel left education at the age of 15 years before taking GCE’s.

Nigel trained as a motor mechanic and set up his own business in the motor trade which continued until 1979 when he entered the financial services industry. In 1986 Nigel was offered & accepted a position as regional manager for an insurance company. In 1988 Nigel invented and patented a synthesised speech module capable of reproducing speech at 120dB that was used for alarm and warning systems. Nigel sold this business to a larger security company in 1991.

In 1991 Nigel invented a magnetic fuel saving product and 3 years later a magnetic wristband for health. He formed Ecoflow Ltd as the manufacturing and marketing company using direct sales as the route to market. The company registered 32,000 independent distributors in the UK and exported products. The company was awarded the BT Innovations Award and was twice featured in the Virgin/Sunday Times Top 100 fastest growing Private Companies.

Nigel sold the company in 2003.

In 2005 Nigel purchased a cattle ranch in South Africa to develop into a Private Game Reserve specialising in endangered antelope. After completing the project and building a new house on the property (Khusela Game Reserve) life became a little boring African politics did not rest well with him so he returned to the UK in 2008

In 2010 Nigel invented and patented a self-powered Tens health bracelet and sold the rights in 2011.

Nigel’s hobby is classic car rallying. Together with his wife he has competed in and had some success in various rallies in Europe and Africa as well as the 1997 Peking to Paris and in 2000 the Around the World in 80 days rally. Today, he is competing less frequently in his 1934 Bentley.

Ian Doyle Shareholder Representative

Ian has a background in Software Sales and had a very successful career with Peoplesoft.

Thirty years ago, Ian and his current business partner formed Royal Pines, as a private landlord business. The business has grown significantly and Royal Pines now has a considerable portfolio of housing stock.

Ian has also invested, in many construction projects, and he is very much a “hands on” investor in this type of project to ensure the projects are completed on time and in Budget.

Ian has been an investor in Affresol for more than 7 years. Ian’s “Sales” and “Construction” experience have added real value to the Board and Ian takes his role as Shareholder representative very seriously, challenging both the board and the management team in terms of building shareholder value in all aspects of the business

John Hendzel Shareholder Representative

John Graduated from Ealing Business School with a BA (Hons) in Business Studies.

John subsequently worked in Sales Management with United Biscuits, Endsleigh Insurance Ltd, British American Tobacco, and Abbey Life.

In 1983, John set up his own Independent Financial Consultancy & Brokerage in Bristol. He developed this into a very successful regional business, and sold the business after 28 years.

In 2011 John retired, and has spent much of his spare time supporting Affresol.

John is genuinely concerned about the impact of Global warming on the planet and sees the Affresol Green Technology as a catalyst to make a real difference to the Carbon Footprint. John was very keen to invest in this technology and he was the first Affresol independent shareholder.

john has continued to provide funding support to the MD as well as being the prime point of contact for many of the shareholders.

John takes his role as shareholder representative very seriously and is happy to pass on business updates to any of the Affresol shareholders.
