Affresol have worked in collaboration with Network Rail to develop a TPR® synthetic concrete troughing solution. Driving the use of green technology, we manufacture troughs from TPR® which is produced from a cold manufacturing process that utilises mixed plastic waste and minerals diverted from landfill. The plastic used is sourced from industrial sectors including; Utilities, Ministry of Defence, Construction, Rail and Electronics.

The TPR® cable troughs are a robust alternative to traditional pre-cast concrete troughing. They are 40% lighter than the concrete equivalent, reducing the risk of musculo-skeletal injuries associated with manual handling and making deployment less labour intensive.  Each trough has a label which highlights the Manual Handling guidelines and also a unique reference number giving full traceability. The troughs have a 30 year warranty.

Affresol is supported by the Carbon Trust and has an ongoing relationship with Cardiff University. We proactively work with the Environment Agency to reduce waste going to landfill.

What is TPR® synthetic concrete?
TPR® (Thermo Polymerised Rock) is a non cementitious synthetic concrete that has been developed in the UK by Affresol Limited with support from Cardiff University and the Carbon Trust. TPR® is produced from a cold manufacturing process that utilizes size reduced recycled mixed plastic waste products and waste minerals.

Our innovative mixing process produces a mouldable compound that is poured like a “semi dry” traditional concrete mix. There is an exothermic reaction after the product has been poured and TPR® is solid after 3 hours, full curing takes 24 hours at which stage the compressive strength is similar to concrete that has been cured for 40 days.

All of the waste streams that are used in the TPR® process have been diverted from landfill and any materials that can be recycled are channelled back into the market for reuse. TPR® has undergone stringent testing to the highest levels set by the British Standards Institute and/or European Standards.

Current estimates based on intensive durability testing of TPR® rate the durability as “better than XF1 frost resistant concrete.”

Affresol operates to ISO 9001 manufacturing standards and included in this process standard is a rigorous testing regime that ensures all of the Affresol products are produced to the highest standards.

TPR® is not the cure-all solution to replace traditional concrete, it is a sustainable alternative for specific applications where concrete is not most suitable for the job in hand.
